Knowledge base
Fungal toenails, also known as onychomycosis, are a common condition where the nail becomes infected by fungi. This can cause the nail to become discoloured, thickened, brittle, or crumbly—often leading to discomfort and embarrassment, especially during sandal season.
At Foot Medic™ Cardiff, we understand how frustrating fungal nails can be. The good news? They’re treatable. From topical lacquers and sprays to oral medication and cosmetic solutions, there are a range of effective options available depending on the severity of the infection. Let us explain...
What is it?
Curanail is a medicated nail lacquer, containing amorolfine – an anti-fungal agent that penetrates the nail to kill the fungus.
How does it work?
It creates an anti-fungal environment to prevent the spread of the nail fungus to the healthy new nail growth. As the fungus lives on the nail bed, the nail must be thinned down or fenestrated by a podiatrist to be fully effective.
Pro's & Con's of Curanail
Targets the infection topically
Easy to apply at home
Minimal side effects
Suitable for mild to moderate cases
Requires twice weekly application for 6–12 months
Less effective if more than half of the nail is affected
No guarantee of complete nail clearance

WHAT TO EXPECT AT
Your practitioner will take a full medical, medication & lifestyle history if you have never visited the clinic before, or review it if you have. All your information is taken in a private room and stored on our secure database for your privacy & security.
Before any treatment, your practitioner will undertake a visual and sometimes physical examination to assess the cause of your condition and the treatment plan they will follow to achieve the best outcome.
Once you and our practitioner are happy with the treatment plan, you will be treated in a clean environment, with sterile instruments (if needed) together with the latest technology so we can provide the highest standard of care in-line with evidenced based medicine.
We aim to provide professional, affordable foot care at all times. Our treatment fees therefore reflect the high standard of care we provide. CLICK HERE to view our fees for this service.
Simple conditions such as corns and calluses (hard skin) and minor nail complaints are treated in one session. Recurring conditions and those that need a treatment plan such as verrucae, fungal infections etc. often need regular treatment. The treatment regime is determined by your practitioner who will discuss this with you.
With a few exceptions, most people will benefit from a routine foot appointment as we always assess your general and lower limb health together with the treatment we provide. Routine podiatry is as important as regular dental and optical check-ups in maintaining your general health and wellbeing.
